Cato Scholar John Samples Joins CCP as Academic Advisor

The Center for Competitive Politics (CCP) welcomes Cato scholar John Samples as the newest Academic Advisor to the CCP team. Samples, well-known author of books such as The Struggle to Limit Government: A Modern Political History and The Fallacy of Campaign Finance Reform, is the current Director of the Center for Representative Government at the Cato Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based free-market think-tank dedicated to public policy research on the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Its scholars and analysts conduct independent, nonpartisan research on a wide range of policy issues.

As Director of the Center for Representative Government at Cato, Samples oversees the Institute’s studies of campaign finance regulation, the delegation of legislative authority, the political culture of limited government, and the civic virtues necessary for liberty. He also teaches a course on constitutional law for The Fund for American Studies. Before joining Cato, Samples spent eight years as director of Georgetown University Press and, prior to that, was vice president of the Twentieth Century Fund. He has published scholarly articles in Society, History of Political Thought, and Telos and has also been featured in mainstream publications like USA Today, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. He has appeared on NPR, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. He earned a Ph.D. in political science from Rutgers University.

Bradley Smith, CCP Founder and Chairman, noted that “John’s book, The Fallacy of Campaign Finance Reform, is one of the best analyses of the theories of ‘reform’ and the actual evidence supporting the benefits of free speech that has been written. We are very proud to add himformally to our community.”

For his part, Samples sees joining the Academic Advisory Board of CCP as a natural fit.

“I am delighted to join the Academic Advisory Board for the Center for Competitive Politics,” Samples said. “CCP has made a big difference in defending the First Amendment by bringing sound social science and legal research to bear on policy issues. In a short time, CCP has become the premier think tank on the side of free speech in campaign finance.”

Please join us in welcoming Samples to the CCP family.
